Healthy Halloween Treats.

Soon little witches, ghosts + goblins will lurk the streets with tummy aches, carrying sugar-laden jack-o-laterns  filled with the sneakiest + scariest ingredients of all…

Now, tell me, is there anything more terrifying? Probably, but I am just trying to get a spooky intro started for this post, and I can tell it went nowhere fast. Yikes. #itworkedthoughright

HA.

Ok, y’all. Halloween is almost here!

And a lot of us are participating in the festivities one way or another, whether it be handing out treats or taking your own kiddos trick-o-treating! I don’t know about you, but I always love seeing all of the fun costumes that knock on my front door, mostly toothless toddlers + awkward middle schoolers dressed as Elsa or Captain America. #socute

In previous years while handing out treats, I would have two batches of goodies to give away… some traditional Halloween candy, and others specifically for kids with peanut allergies. But this year I plan to not hand out candy. #GASP

And you guys, I don’t need to go into all the health details on why… but let’s just start with the toxic chemicals, GMOs, HFCS, artificial flavoring, and food coloring dyes, to name a few. Read more in detail on why these are bad for your children’s health.

So, with that in mind, one of the coolest projects I’ve seen in raising awareness during Halloween around kid’s food allergies is the Teal Pumpkin Project.

This movement is all about making Halloween a safe + healthy experience for all, but especially for those who can’t consume candy due to the severity of their food allergies. And well, with me being a nutritionist, I had to jump on this train, because I think it is such a great alternative (and I can’t hand out healthy homemade goodies because they’d just get tossed…#sadface) to the junk we often see stocked on the grocery shelves or piled up in the Trick-or-Treat baskets.

How do you let people know you are joining the movement? All you have to do is place a teal pumpkin on your porch to let the neighborhood know you are being mindful of allergies + health around Halloween! Read more about the Teal Pumpkin Project here.

So, what are some fun + safe Halloween treats to hand out that won’t compromise children’s health?

Here is a list of fun goodies you can dish out while still participating in the fun of it all!

  1. Glow Sticks (This is what I will be handing out…Obvi!)
  2. Spider Rings
  3. Playdoh
  4. Bubbles
  5. Stickers
  6. Temporary Tattoos
  7. Fun Pencils
  8. Vampire Teeth
  9. Bouncy Balls
  10. Whistles

Just promise me you won’t be lame…
